A little bit about our craft..

The Fundamentals

Design..

Our unique style of modern furniture has evolved from a simple philosophy; “to capture and exhibit the beauty of timber and craftsmanship”.

Subtle; but powerful design elements showcase our precision and excellent craftsmanship.

Functionality..

Often forgotten, overlooked and disregarded; functionality is an important component of any design.

From first plans to the finished product, each component is carefully considered before construction.

Too often furniture and cabinetry suffers the same common flaws; sticky drawers and saggy doors. We use only quality hardware and finishes to ensure our crafts don’t just “work” but “keep working”.

Affordability..

We understand not everyone’s budget is the same; but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a quality product.

At Made By Matthew we work with our clients to create a design to suit your budget; without compromising on our craftsmanship.

Construction techniques, design, materials and finishes can all be considered to reduce costs.

Sustainability..

Environmental conservation and sustainability are considered when creating our designs.

Timber and our native forests are a precious, already greatly reduced resource that command respect and consideration.

Our dry-sawn veneering technique is not only cost effective but also produces little waste and allows for the most economical use of our precious timbers.

We work with new and recycled timbers and endeavor to source timbers from sustainable milling practices.

Dry Sawn Veneering

Much of our furniture is constructed using a dry sawn veneering process. Movement in solid timber bench tops (and furniture) can cause unnecessary stress to the cabinetry and other installations such as tiled splash backs; decreasing their overall lifespan. Our dry sawn veneering process offers the same durability as solid timber and an almost identical look with the added benefit of stability from a core substrate.

Three-millimeter veneers are sawn and processed in our workshop from carefully selected timbers; stitched together by hand and fixed to a substrate. This process maintains the integrity of the timber whilst producing little waste and is a cost effective alternative to solid timber.

"Pencils Paper and Design"

From “Pencil and Paper” to Finished Product.. We work with our customers during the design and construction process to make your dreams a reality.

At Made By Matthew we believe a home is much more than a house, It’s a space where family and friends can gather.

A space to live, learn and entertain.

We believe each of our designs should be as unique as your home.

Whether its "starting from scratch" or integrating into the existing cabinetry, our knowledge of construction ensures a seamless fit for your home.

A little bit about the craftsman..

A Little Bit About Me..

My story starts like any other. Rather unremarkably.

You might say I wasn’t truly home until we made it to the Southwest. I was two..

In December 2015 I moved to Bridgetown from my family home in Greenbushes.

I met my beautiful fiancée not long after.

In January 2019 we bought our home. We got to work building the first baby Burnett and little Eleanor was born not long after in February 2022.

My employment locally for Glen Holst over the past decade has given me the opportunity to develop a strong skill set and high attention to detail.

The experience I’ve gained working on corporate and high-end residential commissions will be invaluable as we try to bring a cost effective range of quality cabinetry and furniture to Bridgetown and the South West.

Over the course of my career I’ve been awarded several personal commendations for my craftsmanship and have a strong passion for the industry.

Your support, consideration, time and intrigue is appreciated as we open a new chapter in our lives.

Humble Beginnings

Our passion for craft and manufacture (also 90s nostalgia) drove the development of our first two retail products.

Made By Matthews line of “music boxes” and “timber finger boards” are still available for purchase today at The Rabbit Hole in Bridgetown.

Our line of bespoke handmade music boxes are the perfect gift, a brilliant keepsake or a fine addition to any collection of word works and arts..

Each original design starts by selecting a quality mechanical music box mechanism.

Some designs feature specific engravings inspired by the music.

Others are more subtle; elegantly showcasing the mechanism inside whilst highlighting the fine details and natural beauty of each timber.

These ergonomically shaped timber finger boards feature custom laser engravings.

Each board is made from three carefully selected veneers, laser cut and engraved, then laminated in a custom 3D printed mould.

Any glue residue is removed before each board is given a fine sanding and a low gloss lacquer finish is applied.

The grip tape (top face) is engraved with our product hallmark and affixed using a small amount of adhesive before a final seal is applied.
